What if Mediumship Was Something Else?
When we talk about mediumship, individual and collective imaginations quickly run wild.
Often we still picture a dark room lit by a candle, a crystal ball, cards spread across a table, and a mysterious figure delivering spectacular predictions.
The result?
Many people still associate this practice with mysticism fairs or, worse, scams of all kinds.
This is particularly true in countries like France, where the culture of Anglo-Saxon spiritualism—which structured, regulated, and professionalized the practice—did not share the same historical and institutional roots, often leaving the field wide open to misconceptions.
That said, I am really glad to see that the world of mediumship is starting to evolve in these countries as well. Especially in France, where I live. Spoiler: It was about time.
And even though there is still a long way to go, a new generation of practitioners is emerging: professionals who are grounded, trained, committed to ethics and transparency. Far from the clichés of the past.
Today, consulting a medium should no longer mean blindly submitting to an inaccessible “gift,” but rather engaging in an enlightened approach to personal development and guidance. Modern mediumship is not a passive reception of mystical messages, but a safe, structured dialogue on equal footing—and above all free from fear-mongering.
In this article, we’ll look at this modern, pragmatic approach, which deeply respects free will.
First, an immutable principle, at least for me: mediumship is not a gift reserved for a chosen few.
Everyone possesses the capacity and can develop it, depending on their willingness and choices.
My classes and retreats, for example, are for all people, also absolute beginners, with common sense, openness and emotional maturity. Because this grounded foundation is precisely what is needed to work seriously and responsibly with the invisible world.
But that will be the subject of an upcoming article.
The Three Pillars of Modern Mediumship
Modern mediumship according to Anglo-Saxon spiritualism is based on 3 pillars:
Evidence
This is the key pillar that validates all work of the medium and their quality.
In the Anglo-Saxon tradition, communication with the afterlife, the loved ones in the Spirit World, only has value if it provides verifiable, precise facts validated by the client. This is called “evidential mediumshipe.
Evidence is not ‘I feel a loving energy from your grandmother,’ but facts: a unique hobby, a specific shared memory, or a detail only the client knows. Or even information that the client is not yet aware of at that moment, but which they validate later after verification.
Ethics
A professional and trustworthy medium works:
- within a strict moral and ethical framework
- with kindness and sensisitivity
- with absolute respect for the client
- without generating any fear or dependency.
My personal golden rule: Every session and work must ensure my client feels better afterwards than before
Know-How :
This is the rejection of the requirement for an innate “magical gift.” As stated above, everyone possesses the capacity for mediumship, even if individually it is more or less “naturally” developed.
Mediumship is learnt, worked on, and practised through constant rigor and mastery of both, the altered states of consciousness and the techniques involved.
What is the True Role of the Modern Medium?
The primary objective must be to help the client. Ego and self-interest should never have their place here.
Most people are unaware that they possess inner strengths and capacities that can help them find solutions and unblock situations on their own. Consequently they look for solutions outside themselves.
The role of the modern medium is to enable them to recognize, develop, and use this inner strength—the great capabilities they carry within. And, beyond that, to help them access the external power of the invisible world, which is there to assist anyone who calls upon it.
Both aspects help us tremendously in our life: whether it is finding comfort by communicating with a loved one in the spirit world, or gaining guidance and a vision for our existence.
The medium must show the client the keys to feeling better and moving forward, to reclaiming or taking responsibility for their life. Because no one can do it for them.
The client always retains their free will in this process to follow or ignore advice. Everyone must find their own truth, and you cannot help someone against their will. The medium must therefore not judge, influence with personal opinions, try to convince, or offer help when it is not wanted.
Of course it goes without saying that messages and information must always be positive and uplifiting, never negative, limiting, or frightening.
In summary, a medium’s objective must be to restore hope, to bring light back into us and onto our path.
Because that is the goal of the invisible world: to help us better cope with our lives, to rediscover the light within our lives and within ourselves.
Since the medium is the voice of the invisible world, they must necessarily share that same objective.
Predicting The Future: Yes or No?
This is an important question and a subject that divides opinion.
For me, the real question is not “Can we tell the future?” but rather “Should we do it?”
As a medium, we make choices about what we want to do or not do.
There are mediums, like me, who choose not to offer information about the future, especially not on material aspects.
Why?
Because I believe we should not interfere with people’s free will and free decision-making. Doing so can even carry risks depending on who is sitting across from me.
Moreover, I believe that the future is neither set in stone nor decided in advance in an absolute way. We always keep our free will to influence our lives by our decisions and non-decisions.
It is a complex subject, but to put it simply, I view our life’s journey as a road: we follow it and, from time to time, reach intersections. We can choose to turn left or right if we wish. We might take only a detour and return to the main road, or leave it, lose our way, and find our road again— and sometimes not.
I consider my role to be showing my client their possibilities and potential, enabling them to make their own decisions with confidence and responsibility—not depriving them of that or creating dependency.
There is only one exception for me: When the Spiritual World explicitely tells me to give an information. This means that there is a higher reason behind, important for the client.
Once again, these are personal choices. Everyone must decide for themselves what suits best for them and how they wish to work.
